Woman dies in apartment fire
On 30 March last year a fire erupted in an apartment on Nowy Świat, Warsaw, where a 31‑year‑old woman, then in a homelessness crisis, was sleeping. She was burned to death in the blaze.
Police charge 33‑year‑old suspect
Authorities allege that a 33‑year‑old acquaintance deliberately killed her. The man was indicted for murder with special cruelty. He is accused of pouring a flammable substance on the woman and her bed and setting the apartment ablaze.
Suspect’s alleged motives and claims
Police report that the suspect claimed the apartment was haunted and that it should be burned. He also boasted that he “burned the grill in the apartment” and left the door open to make it louder.
Judicial proceedings and sentence
The suspect, currently in custody for unpaid fines, did not confess to the murder. A court ordered 30 days of house arrest and imposed a potential life sentence.
