Fire at Russia’s Sławnieft Refinery Undermines Oil Output

A blaze broke out Wednesday 1 October at the Sławnieft refinery in Jarosław, Russia, sparking a four‑hour firefight before operations resumed.

Fire at Sławnieft Refinery

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations announced at about 6:30 a.m. that a fire had erupted at the Sławnieft refinery in Jarosław. Local authorities confirmed the incident, saying it was caused by human error rather than a drone strike. Firefighters battled the blaze for roughly four hours before the plant restarted.

Ukrainian Attacks’ Consequences

Ukraine has not yet admitted responsibility, but experts note that drone attacks have repeatedly crippled Russian oil production. Russia reportedly lost about 38 % of its refining capacity due to these assaults, and the industry’s output fell by at least 236 000 tonnes of oil per day, according to The Moscow Times.

Economic Strain and Repairs

In September Russia produced one million tonnes less jet fuel than expected, and gasoline shortages grew to 400 000 tonnes. Independent economist Władysław Inoziemcow attributes prolonged repair timelines to Western sanctions, which hinder access to spare parts and inflate costs.

Russian Offensive Deceleration

Analysts from DeepState report that September saw a slowdown in Russian gains, with only 259 km² captured – the least since May. Russian forces now control about 19.04 % of Ukrainian territory, and defensive positions near Pokrovsk remain highly effective despite intense urban combat.
