Meloni said the recent peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump offers hope for a settlement that would end the war and Palestinian suffering, but cautioned that the flotilla’s attempt to break Israel’s maritime blockade could become a pretext for further conflict.
Flotilla Approaches Gaza, Italian Navy Cedes Protection
The Italian defence ministry announced that the navy would cease protecting the flotilla once it is 150 miles from Gaza. Global Sumud Flotilla’s X account reported its distance at 175 miles and warned that they are entering a high‑risk zone tonight, calling any attack on the flotilla an attack on Palestinians.
Global Sumud Flotilla: Mission and Recent Drone Attacks
Launched from Barcelona in early September, the Global Sumud Flotilla consists of more than 40 vessels aiming to deliver humanitarian aid into Gaza and break Israel’s blockade. Israel has forbidden entry to its territorial waters, and last week the flotilla faced drone attacks near Kret, dropping chemical substances and clay grenades, causing explosions and communication disturbances; several vessels were damaged but no injuries were reported.
