Mysterious Illness Strikes 11‑Year‑Old Stasiu: “Suddenly Trapped Inside Himself”

A Polish child who once was energetic is now unable to eat, drink, or move, with doctors saying his mysterious illness has locked him inside himself.

Early Development

Stasiu was described by his parents as a lively, active boy who had normal growth and development up to the age of eight.

First Illness

In mid‑September 2022, when he was eight, he fell ill with a severe throat infection and headache. A clinic physician noted enlarged lymph nodes and sent him to the emergency department.

The ER conducted basic infectious tests and diagnosed streptococcal pharyngitis. After antibiotics he was sent home, and the infection resolved in two weeks, though weakness remained.

Worsening Symptoms

Soon after, he experienced intense abdominal pain. As symptoms escalated, Stasiu began to have episodes of aggression and auto‑aggression lasting about an hour—he shouted, kicked, spat, and after awakening did not recall the events.

During one episode he handed his sister her belongings, including a savings box of money, saying it was no longer useful. His father described the scene as frightening.

Neurological Evaluation

He now cannot take food or fluids, cannot walk, yet shows no paralysis or dysphagia. Neurologist Dr. Łukasz Przysło of the Mother‑Polka Health Centre in Łódź said the diagnosis remains unconfirmed but described the boy as “suddenly locked inside his own body.”

The 11‑year‑old has been suspected of having neuro‑psychiatric disturbances for three years, underwent extensive encephalitis testing, and is considered drug‑resistant.

Treatment Attempts and Future Plans

Stasiu is currently hospitalized in the neurologic ward of the Mother‑Polka Health Centre and is expected to be discharged soon. The hospital reports that all interventions—including electroconvulsive therapy and pharmacologic coma—proved ineffective.

He was consulted by a leading neuro‑immunology center in Stanford, California. Neurologists, geneticists, psychiatrists, and immunologists could not determine a diagnosis during a brief consultation.

His parents have launched an online fundraiser to support ongoing treatment and care.
