Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned at the European Political Community summit in Copenhagen that Russia’s war is not solely about Ukraine.
Frederiksen Calls for European Resilience
At the opening of the summit, Mette Frederiksen said Russia would not stop until forced. She urged European leaders to make the continent resilient enough that a war against them becomes inconceivable, and that this must be done immediately.
Frederiksen noted that for some states the Russian threat is clear and present, while for others it still feels distant, but everyone must abandon naivety. She stressed that “this war has never been only about Ukraine; it is about Europe, its peoples, its citizens, its values and its freedom.”
Supporting Ukraine is Continental Defence
Frederiksen argued that helping Ukraine is not mere charity but a direct defense of the entire continent. She cited the history of Russian expansion, Soviet tank incursions during the Cold War, and recent events that show a repeating pattern.
She warned that Russia is shifting to a war‑economy approach, using all means to intimidate and divide Europe, and that there are no signs the imperial ambitions of Vladimir Putin will stop at Ukraine alone.
Zelensky Urges Anti‑Drone Cooperation
President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to European leaders at the Copenhagen summit for joint action against Russian drones, pointing out that attacks are aimed not only at Ukraine but also at other European countries.
He announced that Ukrainian armed forces are ready to share their experience in shooting down combat drones and that Ukrainian soldiers already stationed in Denmark can provide training. This, he said, is the first step toward an effective anti‑drone shield for all of Europe.
