Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said no hostages will be exchanged and urged citizens to avoid dangerous regions after Israel seized a Polish‑led flotilla heading to Gaza.
No Hostages, Travelers at Own Risk
Radosław Sikorski told reporters that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will not negotiate with hostage‑taking states and that Poles who ignore travel warnings will do so at their own peril. He referenced countries such as Iran, Belarus and Russia, which have taken Western citizens hostage.
Consular Assistance Limited to Nations
Sikorski noted that consular support is available only within the host country and that parliamentary or diplomatic immunities apply solely in that jurisdiction. He reiterated a strong appeal to avoid traveling to risky areas.
Presidential Spokeswoman Discusses Evacuation Costs
President’s spokesperson Rafał Leśkiewicz added that a proposed bill could hold citizens who break travel advisories liable for the costs of evacuation, reflecting a concern over the growing number of Poles entering conflict zones.
Polish Politician Detained in Gaza Flotilla
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maciej Wiewiór reported that Polish Parliamentarian Franciszek Sterczewski, among other participants, was seized by Israeli forces during a night raid on a flotilla bound for Gaza. He stated that the Polish consul is already in Ashdod monitoring the situation.
Foreign Ministry Monitors Evacuation Process
The Ministry confirmed that all detained Polish citizens will be repatriated and that no Polish citizen will be left without care, as the Israeli authorities plan to deport the detainees back to Europe following the seizure.
