German authorities halted 17 flights from Munich Airport on 2 October after drones appeared near the runway, affecting almost 3,000 passengers.
Munich Airport Cancellations
On Thursday evening, 2 October, Munich Airport cancelled 17 flights due to drone sightings, impacting nearly 3,000 passengers.
Fifteen scheduled arrivals were diverted to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna, and Frankfurt while the airport remained closed until the drones were cleared.
Drone Sightings and Runway Closure
Witnesses reported drone activity near the airport at about 21:30, with additional drones appearing later, prompting a temporary shutdown of the main runway.
Police were dispatched, including helicopters, but authorities said no information was available on the type or number of drones. The airport reopened after the situation was resolved.
International Drone Threats
The incident occurred just before the final weekend of Oktoberfest, a period that draws hundreds of thousands to Munich.
Similar disruptions have been reported at airports in Denmark and Norway, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has suggested Russia may be responsible.
