Beginning 7 October, Wesoła will spend four months modernising Jan Paweł II Street, adding 16 pedestrian crossings, a roundabout, median islands, speed‑bump zones and resurfacing sections.
Project Scope
The city is commencing its long‑planned upgrades on Jan Paweł II Street in Wesoła. According to the Municipal Roads Board, the project will modernise 16 pedestrian crossings between Jodłowa and Dworkowa Streets. The decision follows a safety audit of crossings from 2016‑2020, which rated all of them poorly. The selected contractor, Road and Bridge Construction Enterprise, will carry out the work for under 2.3 million zloty. A four‑month construction period has been scheduled once the contract is signed.
Intersection Safety Enhancements
At the Jodłowa junction, both crossings (rating 2) will receive median islands and the roadway will be narrowed; the western approach will be re‑geometrised and new parking bays will appear while a small basin will be paved. A roundabout will be built at the Diamentowa intersection, improving flow and safety at four crossings: zebra crossings on Diamentowa scored 3, while those on Jan Pawła II scored 1, so additional islands are added there. The road will be narrowed to a single lane and the western approach geometry corrected.
At Fabryczna the two crossings (rating 2) will also get median islands, road narrowing and geometry changes on both approaches. North‑side parking between Fabryczna and Jutrzenka will move onto the roadway, with existing bays partly replaced by pavement. Where the Jutrzenka and Marmurowa intersection has scores of 2 and 4, speed‑bump zones will be installed on the east side.
Jeździecka will see speed‑bumps on the east side and, on the west side, a crossing (rating 2) will receive an island and approach narrowing. Speed‑bumps are also planned at Zdrojowa 1 and Jan Pawła II 31 (both rated 3) on the south and north sides, respectively, and similar measures will be applied at Dworkowa (rating 3).
Road Surfacing Works
The upgrade includes asphalt replacement between Pogodna and Ułańska Streets and on the stretch between the Macierowe Bagno and Witkowskiego roundabouts. These resurfacing actions run concurrently with the installation of median islands, speed‑bumps and intersection reconstructions, aiming to limit speeds, improve visibility and shorten pedestrian crossing distances.
Road Closure Schedule
Engineers will implement phased closures of street segments starting Tuesday, 7 October. The first block from the Pohulanka roundabout to the Miłosna roundabout will be shut, with subsequent extensions reaching Ułańska Street after a few days. Residents are asked to heed current signage and traffic‑management notices as detours and periodic disruptions will occur.
Wider Safety Initiative
The project fits into a broader program to enhance safety at Warsaw crossings. Last year the ZDM modernised 90 crossings and performed numerous smaller corrections; since 2016, safety has been improved at roughly 670 crossings. The large‑scale implementation underway in Wesoła represents the latest phase of this ongoing effort.
