A swimmer from the Formoza Memorial race in Gdynia went missing, prompting a SAR operation that quickly rescued him and highlighted the hazards of the Baltic Sea.

SAR Response Launched for Missing Swimmer

The missing swimmer from the Formoza Memorial, a naval commando swim race in Gdańsk Bay, was reported to the SAR at 15:00. A helicopter and a three‑unit search team were deployed. The quick search located the athlete, who safely reached shore, underscoring the dangers present on the Baltic Sea today.

Incident During Baltic Storm Affects Regatta

Around the same time a storm in the Baltic caused several yachts participating in the Blue Ribbon Regatta near Gdynia to capsize. Some crew members fell into the water but did not require medical assistance. Four additional yachts were secured and brought to port, and the regatta was subsequently cancelled.

Formoza Memorial Celebrates 50 Years of Naval Commandos

The first‑ever Formoza Memorial commemorates the 50th anniversary of the formation of the naval commando unit. Participants can test themselves in two ways: (1) swim the full 5‑km course, equivalent to 50 cables or about 9,250 metres; (2) swim half the distance and return by foot in full military gear, carrying a pack of swimming equipment.

Weather Conditions in Gdynia

From 11:00 to 20:00 the IMGW has issued a level I wind warning for northern Poland, including Gdynia, predicting an average wind speed of up to 45 km/h and gusts up to 75 km/h from the south.
