A rescue operation was launched after several regatta yachts capsized near Gdynia during a storm, with crews assisted but no medical treatment required, and the regatta cancelled.
Rescue Operation Near Gdynia
Sea‑search and rescue director Sebastian Kluska confirmed that two yachts participating in the regatta capsized in a storm near Gdynia. One vessel suffered a broken mast; the other rolled over, leaving crew members in the water. Rescue teams reached both crews, providing assistance without medical intervention. An additional four yachts were threatened but were safely brought back to port.
Conditions During Storm
Wind speed over the sea rose sharply in recent hours, ranging from 30 to 50 kilometres per hour, with gusts locally reaching 70 kilometres per hour. The wind direction was from the south‑east, and strong gusts are expected to continue at speeds up to about 50 kilometres per hour, with occasional bursts of up to 80 kilometres per hour.
Regatta Cancellation
In light of the severe weather, the regatta “Blue Ribbon” has been cancelled. All participating vessels are returning to the Gdynia and Sopot marinas. Services are continuing to check for any remaining assistance needs.
Weather Warning from IMGW
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management issued a warning for the entire Baltic coast before a strong storm. Wind speeds could reach Beaufort scale 9, with alerts for strong wind zones along the coast. Synoptic forecasts predict south‑easterly winds turning south‑westerly at force 7 to 8, gusting to 9, later up to 10, then weakening to 6 to 7 with gusts of 9. The warning remains in force until midnight Saturday.
