Strong Winds in Poland, Baltic Storm Prompt IMGW Alerts

Poland’s meteorological service warned on Saturday that strong winds and a Baltic storm could hit the country over the weekend, prompting nationwide alerts across six regions.

Weather Alerts IMGW

Meteorologists warned that over the weekend residents of northern and southern Poland should brace for very strong winds. In many areas gusts will exceed 70 km/h, and in the Carpathian and Sudeten mountain ranges the winds could reach 85 km/h.

IMGW issued alerts covering dozens of counties in six voivodeships, including Podkarpackie, Małopolskie, Dolnośląskie, and Pomorskie.

Storm in the Baltic

Apart from the mountainous regions, residents of Pomerania are advised to stay alert. Forecast models show the storm will persist through Sunday and Monday over the Baltic Sea.

The strong winds caused the cancellation of some ferry services between Poland and Sweden, and meteorologists warn that high waves pose a serious danger to vessels.

Hurricane Amy Paralyzes Europe

Hurricane Amy cuts across Europe, with the most severe impacts in the north and west. In the Netherlands, about 150 flights at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport were canceled, mainly KLM services.

In Germany, the storm disrupted ferry traffic in the North and Baltic Seas. In Norway, flooding and tree loss were reported in Bergen; in Sweden, strong winds hampered life in Malmö.

British and Irish parks were closed and many outdoor events cancelled. An AP report noted a fatality in Letterkenny, Ireland, linked to the weather. In Scotland, tens of thousands were left without power after wind speeds hit 160 km/h, damaging the power grid.

Scandinavian meteorological services warn that strong winds and heavy rainfall will continue for several days, with the storm likely weakening on Monday, Oct 6.
