France Forms New Government After Fifth Cabinet in Crisis

France announced a new cabinet on Tuesday after a record‑length negotiation, marking the fifth government formed in less than two years amid a political and fiscal crisis.

New Cabinet After Record‑Length Negotiations

After more than three weeks of talks, the Élysée Palace announced the new government. They were the longest negotiations in recent French history. Sebastien Lecornu’s cabinet includes 18 ministers, of whom 11 kept their posts. New appointees include centrist Roland Lescure, who will steer the economy, and former finance minister Bruno LeMaire, who will take charge of defence. Ministry names are to be revealed after the prime minister’s exposé on Tuesday, 7 October.

Opposition: Countdown Begins

Left‑wing leader Jean‑Luc Mélenchon announced on X the submission of a vote of no confidence. “Is all this for that? The countdown has begun to get rid of them all,” he wrote. Marine Le Pen, leader of the far‑right National Front, commented on the new cabinet with the words: “Hands are falling.” Nationalist chief Jordan Bardella said his party would consider supporting the motion if the prime minister does not change course.

France Still in Crisis

Sebastien Lecornu’s cabinet is already the fifth government since the start of the political and fiscal crisis that has lasted just under two years. The prime minister took office from François Bayrou, who in September lost a confidence vote after announcing a €44 billion austerity plan. France faces a rising public debt that reaches 114 % of GDP. President Emmanuel Macron expects the new prime minister primarily to deliver “political and institutional stability” and to preserve France’s influence on the international stage. Lecornu’s cabinet will meet for its first session on Sunday, 6 October.
