Death of Two Teenagers in New York

The bodies of two teenage girls were discovered on the roof of the last car of a subway train at Marcy Avenue station at about 3:00 a.m. on Saturday. Authorities noted the tragedy and confirmed the deaths were confirmed by police.

Demetrius Crichlow, president of the New York City Transit Authority, said it was shocking that the girls chose to climb onto the train roof and that it appeared they believed riding outside a metro car could be a harmless stunt.

A Deadly Trend

“Train surfing” — the act of clambering onto a subway car roof or hanging from its side — has become a hazardous trend on social media that has gained popularity in recent years.

In August 2023, three people died in New York City because of this behavior, and six people have died this way in the previous year. For the past two years, New York police have deployed drones to locate the “surfers.”

“Surfing” in Poland

Similar incidents have occurred in Poland. In June 2024, two young people entered the rear of a fast‑track train at Warsaw station, damaging the car and then the train departed. A 2022 incident involved a YouTuber who climbed into the last car of a train leaving from Młociny station.
