In Herdecke, Germany, 57‑year‑old mayor Iris Stalzer was hit by an assault in the town on 28 September and is now in critical condition.
Attack on Mayor
Mayor Iris Stalzer was attacked on the streets of Herdecke, several men striking her in the abdomen and back. She sustained 13 stab wounds and required immediate medical attention.
Her 15‑year‑old son discovered the injuries and, with her 17‑year‑old daughter present, called emergency services. Police arrived, arrested a suspect, and took the child to the police station.
Stalzer was transported to hospital where she remains in a critical condition.
Election Victory
Stalzer won the second round of local elections on 28 September with 52.2% of the vote, narrowly defeating Fabian Conrad Haas of the CDU.
She cited the intense campaign atmosphere and the growing tension among voters, stating that the criticism was driven more by supporters of her opponent than by the opponent himself.
Investigators have not ruled out political or personal motives behind the attack.
