Six‑Storey Building Collapses in Madrid, Residents Report Strong Shaking; Eight Injured

A partial collapse of a six‑storey building in Madrid on Oct. 7 left eight injured, four missing, and residents reporting intense tremors.

Collapse Details

El Tiempo reported that on Tuesday, Oct. 7, around 6 a.m., a six‑storey building on Hileras Street near Plaza de Ópera in Madrid partially collapsed. Four people were initially reported missing.

Rescue Operations

Eleven fire‑brigade stations, civil‑defence teams and medical responders were mobilised to aid the injured. Officials say eight people were harmed: four with minor injuries, one suffering a broken leg and taken to hospital.

Witness Accounts

One woman who watched the incident said she felt “very strong shaking” before seeing a huge cloud of dust. She added that the building collapsed, they cannot escape, and there are many ambulances and police. Residents claimed the building was being renovated to open a hotel, though a local company owner said it had been abandoned for years.

Possible Cause

The cause of the collapse has not yet been confirmed, but preliminary hypotheses suggest damage to the structure during renovation. The street where the incident occurred and the surrounding area have been fenced off for safety.
