First Snow Expected in Poland – Forecasts Pinpoint Likely Date

Cold Arctic air moving from Scandinavia toward Poland could bring the country’s first snowfall of the year in early October, meteorologists say, with the heaviest chances in northern and northeastern regions.

Cold Arctic air could bring first snow

A cold front from Scandinavia is projected to reach Poland in the third week of October, bringing Arctic air that may produce the year’s first snowfall. The greatest likelihood of a light drift, 2–3 cm, is in northern and northeastern parts from Pomerania through Warmia, Masuria, to Podlaskie.

Uncertain forecasts

Other models suggest a high-pressure system could dominate the same period, delivering pleasant conditions and large temperature swings—from frosty mornings to 15 °C sunny afternoons. Thus, there remains the possibility of a “baby summer” and several sunny autumn days before winter becomes more noticeable.

Winter forecast: more rain than snow

The US CFS and Polish IMGW have issued seasonal outlooks indicating a mild, unstable 2025/26 winter. Average temperatures may be 2–3 °C above normal, with short, intermittent cold spells and snowfalls interrupted by warmer periods. Rain is projected to dominate, with frequent thunderstorms, gusty winds, and intense precipitation in January.

Winter accent only for a moment

Even if the first snow falls in October, it would be brief; the powder would disappear almost as quickly as it appeared, and a clear winter would still lie on the horizon.
