On 8 October, the Szczecin district prosecutor filed murder charges against 31‑year‑old Małgorzata I and her 54‑year‑old mother Renata I for allegedly burying a newborn alive.
Prosecution Filing
On 8 October, the Szczecin District Prosecutor’s Office announced an indictment against 31‑year‑old Małgorzata I and her 54‑year‑old mother Renata I for murdering a newborn with particular cruelty. Małgorzata pleaded guilty and filed an extensive statement; Renata did not. Both had prior convictions. They face a minimum 15‑year sentence or life imprisonment. Currently they are held in temporary detention.
Investigation Findings
Evidence shows that in 2019‑2020 Małgorzata gave birth to a male child. Within hours of delivery, she and Renata buried a living baby on the property they occupy. A court‑psychiatric report found she has an intellectual disability that impaired her understanding of the act, but judges determined she is competent to participate in trial and may serve sentence in a therapeutic facility.
Initial Crime in Rynica
The case first drew attention in April 2025 when police, aided by a tracking dog, entered a property in Rynica, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, where Małgorzata resided with two children. A search uncovered a newborn’s remains. The police subsequently arrested Małgorzata and Renata. Neighbors told TVP3 Szczecin that they had seen Małgorzata pregnant six years earlier but she claimed the child had been given to a hospital; neighbors said otherwise.
