On Wednesday evening, October 8, President’s Office posted Karol Nawrocki’s statement rejecting the Sejm and Senate’s decision that KRRiT’s 2024 activities had ended, saying he categorically disagrees and denies term expiry.
Statement Details
Karol Nawrocki publicly stated that he categorically disagrees with the Sejm and Senate’s arguments for terminating the terms of KRRiT members. He claimed the president has not confirmed the expiry, therefore the terms remain valid.
Senate Rejection
On September 25, the Senate voted 54 to 22 to reject KRRiT’s 2024 annual report. The same report was also rejected by the Sejm in June.
Constitutional Context
According to law, if both parliamentary chambers reject the report, KRRiT members’ terms expire within fifteen days unless the president counters. The expiry is not automatic without presidential confirmation.
Presidential Role
President Karol Nawrocki has not adopted the decree confirming the terms’ expiry, thereby leaving them active. This is in line with the president’s constitutional duty in such cases.
Historical Precedent
In 2010, the KRRiT was dissolved following a similar process, but only after the president endorsed the parliamentary decisions. Last year, President Andrzej Duda also declined to confirm the expiry.
