Firefighters Test for Ammonia After Alarm at Mokotów Primary School

On Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025, fire services evacuated nearly 300 people from Warsaw’s Primary School No. 191 following reports of a pungent odor, conducting tests to detect ammonia.

Initial Response and Evacuation

At 07:59 a fire‑alarm was triggered at the school’s canteen, prompting the Warsaw Fire Service to evacuate 294 students and staff.

Detection of Ammonia

Captain Łukasz Zagdański reported that the first crew measured the odor with a detector and preliminarily found ammonia in the room.

Chemical Safety Team Assessment

The State Fire Service’s Chemical and Ecological Rescue Group is verifying whether the detector readings confirm ammonia or another substance, focusing on the canteen and adjacent areas.

Current Status and Next Steps

Classes remain suspended until test results are confirmed and rooms are ventilated; no casualties have been reported and further action will be decided by the rescue chief.

School Location and Site Security

Primary School No. 191, named after Józef Ignac Kraszewski, is at Bokserska 30, Służewiec (Mokotów). Security personnel maintain the site until rescue and inspection conclude.
