Krasznahorkai Nominated for 2024 Nobel Prize
After 13:00, it was announced that László Krasznahorkai, a Hungarian novelist and screenwriter born in Gyula in 1954, would receive the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature. He was praised for his “fascinating and visionary work that confirms the power of art in the face of apocalyptic terror.” Krasznahorkai has been awarded the Kossuth Prize and has been a member of the Digital Literature Academy and the Széchenyi Literature and Arts Academy since 2004. His notable works include “Devil’s Tango,” “Melancholia of Resistance,” and “War and War.”
Polish Laureates of the Nobel Prize
In total, five Poles have been honoured with the Nobel Prize in Literature. The list begins with French poet Sully Prudhomme, the first laureate in 1901, and includes the recent 2023 laureate, South Korean author Han Kang, who won for her poetic prose confronting historical trauma. The Swedish Academy awards the prize without publishing nominees beforehand.

The Nobel Prize has been awarded since 1901 for achievements in literature, peace, physiology or medicine, physics, chemistry, and economics. Winners receive a gold medal, a diploma, and a prize money of 11 million Swedish kronor, approximately 4.2 million Polish złoty.
