Łukasz Żak Leaves Courtroom as Detention Extends in Łazienkowska Crash Trial

On Thursday, the Warsaw Śródmieście District Court extended Łukasz Żak’s temporary arrest in the fatal Łazienkowska Road crash case, while four co‑defendants received police supervision and travel bans after paying 75,000 PLN bail.

Temporary Detention Extended

On 9 October, the Warsaw Śródmieście District Court extended Łukasz Żak’s temporary arrest in the fatal Łazienkowska Road crash case.

Substituted Measures for Co‑Defendants

Four co‑defendants had their temporary detention replaced with police supervision, a prohibition from leaving Warsaw, and a ban on approaching a witness, conditional on a 75,000 PLN bail.

Witness Testimonies and Incident

Witnesses, including emergency responders and a policeman, testified that the alleged driver did not claim to have been driving and that after the crash three men prevented a witness from approaching the injured woman.

During the court session, Łukasz Żak reacted emotionally, raised his voice, and exited the courtroom, necessitating intervention by court security.

Case Background and Allegations

On 15 September 2024 near the Torwar stop, Łukasz Żak is accused of driving a Volkswagen under the influence of alcohol while using a phone, speeding at approximately 226 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, and colliding with a Ford carrying a four‑person family. The collision killed a 37‑year‑old man, injured his wife and children, and seriously wounded Żak’s passenger.

Future Hearing Date

The next hearing is scheduled for 21 November, with release decisions for the four co‑defendants dependent on bail payment and compliance with court‑imposed restrictions.
