Poland’s President Sends Firm Letter to EU Commission Chair—“We Will Not Agree”

On Thursday October 9, Polish President Karol Nawrocki sent a firm letter to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, voicing Poland’s refusal to host illegal migrants.

Letter to Ursula von der Leyen

Karol Nawrocki’s note, posted on X, declared that “Poland will not agree to any European institution action that would lead to the placement of illegal migrants in Poland.” The president underscored that the eastern border has faced sustained migration pressure for over four years, governed by the Moscow regime through Belarusian cooperation and special services.

Support for Ukrainian Refugees

Nawrocki highlighted that Poland allocates considerable resources to secure the EU’s eastern frontier and bears the cost of hosting Ukrainian war refugees. He noted that around one million Ukrainians presently live in Poland and praised the country’s solidarity, stating that “Poland acted responsibly despite no obligation to do so.”

Reference to Merkel’s 2015 Decision

The letter recalled German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s 2015 “safe third country” decision, arguing that the lack of migration risk is a key security element. Nawrocki acknowledged illegal migration as a problem but argued that mandatory transfer of migrants to Central‑Eastern European states is not a solution, urging member states to focus on economic and security issues in Africa and the Middle East to curb migration.
