During a heated debate on alcohol policy on live TV, a PiS MP issued a sharp remark that led to a brawl among lawmakers in the studio.
Storm in the Studio
During a live debate about alcohol policy, a member of the Opposition coalition made a controversial statement that ignited a conflict among lawmakers.
Bronisław Foltyn, a Konfederacja MP, announced that his faction would not support the bill imposing a night prohibition on alcohol sales, stating that it violated freedom of transaction and citizen rights.
He was confronted by Senator Magdalena Biejat of the Left, who questioned if this was a form of “drinking to death,” to which he replied that it was merely about buying what one wants to eat or drink.
PiS MP Sebastian Kaleta further provoked the debate, asking, “Always, miss, drink to death? You need to know how to drink.” The back‑and‑forth escalated to shouting until journalist Andrzej Stankiewicz had to intervene.
Parliamentary Alcohol Ban Debate
Reports emerged of a party‑room celebration with PiS politicians following the inauguration of the new president. The event included noisy singing and controversial chants that prompted a second intervention by the Marshal’s Guard.
Deputy Dariusz Matecki claimed the MPs simply sang, while senators alleged the presence of vulgar insults and aggression. Despite the controversy, many parliamentarians saw no need to legalise a prohibition of alcohol within the Sejm.
Night-Time Alcohol Ban in Polish Cities
On 9 October, Wrocław enacted a municipal resolution banning alcohol sales during nighttime. From November, a partial prohibition will take effect in Warsaw’s Praga Północ and Śródmieście districts.
Similar night prohibitions are already enforced in Kraków, Bydgoszcz, Katowice, Poznań and Zakopane.
