Trump Hopes for a Nobel Peace Prize—Is He Likely to Win?

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has declared that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, raising questions about his chances amid ongoing political controversies.

Trump Hails Himself as “Peace President” and Demands Nobel Prize

The former U.S. president repeatedly asserted that he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize, saying that nothing he wanted more was the award. He calls himself a “peace president” and believes the Nobel Committee should recognize him. In 2024 he joked that if he were Barack Obama, he would receive the prize in ten seconds—a reference to Obama’s 2009 award given less than a year into his term. Trump still insisted in 2025 that he “deserved” the prize, although it has never been bestowed upon him. He also claimed to have “ended seven wars” during his second term, an achievement that could justify the reward. However, not all conflicts he cited were classified as full‑scale wars, and many remained unresolved.

Experts Question Trump’s Chances of Award

In 2019, Trump said he was to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. In 2025 he claimed that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and Pakistan’s government would nominate him. American experts predict that the Nobel Committee is unlikely to award Trump for his second‑term achievements. The committee emphasizes “sustained peace, promotion of international goodwill, and quiet work by institutions that strengthen these goals,” according to the Associated Press citing experts. One expert suggested the committee probably wants to avoid being seen as susceptible to political pressure.

Professor Isak Svensson of Uppsala University also regards a Trump award as “very unlikely.” In his analysis, the formal basis is that Trump’s main mediation efforts occurred after January, starting his presidency, whereas the committee evaluates events prior to 2025. Svensson added that “many indicate the negotiating parties are more focused on improving relations with the United States than on seeking peaceful solutions.”

Nobel Peace Prize Announcement Scheduled for October 10, 2025

The Nobel Peace Prize winner will be announced on Friday, October 10, 2025. All Nobel prizes are presented on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.

Nobel Prize Structure and Funding

The Nobel prizes, per Nobel’s will, honor outstanding achievements in physiology or medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, and peace. The Nobel Fund derives from interest on Nobel’s estate and is managed by the Nobel Foundation. Economics is the youngest prize, funded by the Swedish Bank in 1968. Scientific prizes are awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences; the physiology or medicine prize by the Karolinska Institute; the literature prize by the Swedish Academy; and the peace prize by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
