Swedish Institute for International Affairs released an analysis stating that former U.S. President Donald Trump is unlikely to win the Nobel Peace Prize, according to Uppsala University professor Isak Svensson.
Analysis Released Before Nobel Week
The Swedish Institute for International Affairs published an analysis on the Utrikesmagasinet website just before the start of Nobel week. The paper was authored by Isak Svensson, a peace‑and‑conflict specialist at Uppsala University.
Professor’s Assessment of Trump’s Mediation Efforts
Svensson concluded that Donald Trump would not receive the Peace Nobel. He noted that Trump’s mediation activities began primarily after taking office in January 2025, with the only exception being negotiations in the Gaza Strip, and emphasized that the Norwegian Nobel Committee evaluates achievements prior to 2025, with nominations closing at the end of January.
Critique of Trump’s Claims of Peace Contributions
The professor argued that Trump’s involvement failed to produce lasting solutions to deeper conflicts. He cited evidence that involved parties pursued improved relations with the United States rather than genuine peace, and criticized the mediation for serving the mediator’s economic interests, omitting key issues, and lacking detail. Svensson added that U.S. actions were aimed primarily at economic interests.
Netanyahu’s Nomination of Trump
On July 8, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met President Trump at the White House and presented a nomination letter to the Nobel Committee. Netanyahu praised the Trump administration for the Abraham Accords and building peace in other countries, claiming Trump deserved the prize. Trump replied that he had been unaware of the nomination and that it meant little to him.
Current Status of Nobel Peace Prize Announcement
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate will be announced on Friday in Oslo. Svensson suggested the prize should be awarded to Middle‑East peace activists or human‑rights defenders in Palestine rather than Trump. The 2009 Peace Prize had been awarded to Barack Obama, a former rival of Trump.
