The city of Wrocław will prohibit alcohol sales between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. from October 9, applying city‑wide.
City‑wide Ban Covers All Shops and Stations
From 9 October, residents will be unable to purchase alcohol in any shop or fuel station between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The ban does not affect restaurants, bars, or clubs where drinks may be consumed on site.
The council’s decision aims to improve living conditions and cut public alcohol consumption, according to municipal officials.
Previous Pilot Reduced Police Interventions
The restriction was first piloted in 2024 on nine districts, resulting in a 6.7 % drop in police interventions and a 15.14 % drop in municipal guard actions.
In districts with the highest numbers of off‑premises sale points, the ban was implemented first. A survey found that nearly 60 % of residents supported it. Similar measures have already been adopted in 176 municipalities nationwide, with 85 % evaluating them favorably.
Health and Social Dimensions
Lower Silesia allocates about 66.5 million PLN annually to medical care related to alcohol poisoning. Liver disease mortality in the region is 28 % above the national average.
The deputy health minister noted rising aggressive behavior toward medical staff linked to intoxicated nighttime patients, suggesting that curbing night sales could reduce such incidents.
Other Cities Eyeing Similar Measures
Debate over a nighttime ban sparked after disturbances in Warsaw, where the pilot initially covered only two districts. The ban is expected to extend citywide. On 6 October, Lublin councilors announced comparable proposals.
