Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Saturday that Poland would be exempt from the EU’s migrant relocation scheme, citing tightened border controls and visa tightening.
Tusk Confirms Poland’s Exclusion
On Saturday, Donald Tusk posted on social media that Poland will not participate in the EU relocation of migrants. He stated that the country will seal the border with Belarus, tighten visa and asylum rules, and set an example for others, adding that the relocation plan has been resolved.
MEP Kohut Supports Decision
Polish MEP Łukasz Kohut said Warsaw had long pushed for this outcome, pointing to the large number of refugees from Ukraine, the ongoing war, and the hybrid war along the eastern border. He warned against politicising the matter and highlighted Poland’s role as a frontline state with over a million Ukrainian and Belarusian refugees.
EU Migrant Pact: What Comes Next?
The European Commission will decide on the issue in the coming week. By Wednesday it will outline members’ obligations under the migrant pact, evaluate pressure levels, estimate an annual solidarity fund, and assess financial contributions and relief for high‑pressure states.
