Dangerous Storm Threats the Baltic Sea – IMGW Issues Warnings

The Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has issued an official storm warning for the Baltic Sea, with strong north‑westerly winds and seas up to State 5 across northern, central, and southeastern sectors.

Storm Warning for Northern Baltic

The northern sector is expected to experience a north‑westerly wind that may pivot to the north at times. Initial gusts will reach Beaufort 9, with overall sustained winds of 7‑8. Sea state will be 5 (rough), ocean temperature around 11 °C, visibility good to moderate, and intermittent rainfall.

Central Baltic Outlook

Central waters will see a north‑westerly wind turning northward, with sustained speeds of 7‑8 and gusts up to Beaufort 9. When the wind weakens, it will range from Beaufort 5‑7. Expected sea state is 4‑5, temperature about 12 °C, visibility good to moderate, with sporadic rain.

Southeast Baltic Conditions

The southeast sector will have a north‑westerly wind skewing toward the north, with sustained speeds of 6‑7 and gusts up to 8 Beaufort. Sea state is 4‑5, temperature approximately 13 °C, visibility good to moderate, and localized rainfall.

Hydrological Alert

Synoptic services have also released a hydrological warning for the Pomeranian province, specifically the East Coast and inner marine waters of the South‑East Baltic, and the Dead Vistula. Due to high Baltic water levels (524 cm as of 12 Oct 2025) and the forecasted weather, water levels are expected to rise to High State, with possible exceeds of Warning State in places. The alert runs until 12:00 PM on Monday, 13 October.
