On Saturday, a 14‑year‑old boy was fishing near Thursday Island in the Torres Strait region when he jumped into the water and was bitten by a shark on the torso.

Critical Condition

Witnesses helped the boy reach shore. He suffered severe abdominal injuries and lost a great deal of blood, requiring immediate transport to hospital.

Witnesses Rescue

Bystanders assisted the teenager onto the shore and he was promptly taken to the hospital, where the spokesperson stated the boy remains in critical condition.

Local Officials Comment

Townshire mayor, Elsi Seriat, expressed deep concern about the incident and praised the bravery of the boy’s friends who helped him to land.
