A young man was arrested after stripping and urinating on the altar of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City on Friday morning.
Incident at St. Peter’s Basilica
Witnessed by numerous tourists, a young man approached the altar, removed his trousers, and urinated on the altar just as the crowd gathered inside the basilica.
Pope’s reaction
The Vatican’s media reported that Pope Francis was “shocked” by the news once the information reached him through official channels.
Police intervention
Italian outlets said the man was promptly seized by police present in the basilica, who brought him into custody without delay.
Earlier 1865 chandelier incident
Earlier in February, another man had entered the altar and damaged a 1865 chandelier, marking another scandal in St. Peter’s.
