Polish Tourist Dies After 300‑Meter Fall in Slovak Tatra

A 45‑year‑old Polish tourist was killed when she fell approximately 300 meters onto a ravine near MałaWysoka in the Slovak Tatra on the morning of October 12.

Tragic Accident Near MałaWysoka

A 45‑year‑old Polish tourist fell from a height of about 300 meters into the Rohatka ravine on Sunday morning, October 12, in the MałaWysoka region. The Slovak Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) received the call from the tourist herself. Helicopters were grounded by severe weather conditions—high winds, low temperatures, and limited visibility—so ground rescue teams, supported by an avalanche prevention unit and a mountain shelter staff member, assessed the site. The body was found close to a blue hiking trail, and the tourist was pronounced dead on arrival.

Assistance for Other Polish Tourists

The same day, HZS helped other Polish visitors. A 35‑year‑old woman fell into a ravine beneath Ciężki Szczyt while on a difficult, icy trail and lost orientation. Rescuers reached her by helicopter, landing on Siarkańska Pass. Another Polish tourist sustained a head injury after a fall. Weather changes again prevented Slovak helicopter evacuation, leading to the deployment of a TOPR rescue vehicle from Zakopane. Polish helicopter then transported the injured and rescuers back to Poland, landing in Podhale.

Difficult Conditions and Rescuers’ Appeal

HZS stresses that conditions in the High Tatras are currently very harsh: fresh snow above 2,000 m and iced‑up trails, coupled with low temperatures and shorter daylight hours increase accident risk. Rescue teams urge hikers to adapt plans to weather, select appropriate routes, and carry winter gear—ice axes, crampons, and lighting. Slovak authorities also remind that from November 1 to May 31 most trails above mountain huts will remain closed as a standard yearly safety measure during the winter season.
