Local radio NDR reported that the father lived nearby and had been separated from the mother. Bild noted that the father and son had a good relationship, with regular contact only recently restored.
A witness who was in the area spotted the child and called for help; the police preliminarily concluded that outsiders could have contributed to the boy’s death.
Mother and Residents Mourn His Death
The father and mother were informed of the search’s conclusion and were surrounded by specially trained health personnel. Local residents gathered in the church for a funeral Mass.
Candles and stuffed toys were laid by the church; the mayor, Sascha Zimmermann, expressed his condolences, saying “My thoughts are with Fabian’s family, relatives, and close friends.”
Missing Child in Güstrow
Fabian vanished on Friday 10 October when he was supposed to return home but did not, prompting his mother to report the disappearance that evening.
Searches concentrated on the area south of Güstrow around lake Inselsee and the wooded area near Zehna, involving several hundred volunteers, search‑dogs, and divers.
The mother posted a nighttime video pleading with her son to return: “Fabian, please come home to your mother!”
