Jarosław Kaczyński is summoned to testify before prosecutors on 15 October as authorities investigate the 2020 postal voting system, which was allegedly imposed without legal authority.
Jarosław Kaczyński Called to the Prosecutor’s Office
Radio ZET confirmed that Jarosław Kaczyński was summoned to the prosecutor’s office as a witness on 15 October. The summons has been acknowledged, and the meeting coincides with an upcoming parliamentary session. The deputy reporter noted that the deputy may be occupied with parliamentary duties.
Postponed Elections in Poland
The controversy dates back to 2020, when preparations for the presidential election overlapped with the COVID‑19 pandemic. On 16 April, then‑prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki instructed two state‑owned companies—Poczta Polska and Polska Wytwórnia Papierów Wartościowych—to set up and conduct elections by mail. The National Audit Office later found that the prime minister had exceeded his authority.
Morawiecki Faces Charges
The National Audit Office said that organising and conducting the elections were the remit of electoral bodies, and that no statute authorised a general election by mail. A law allowing mail voting only entered force on 9 May 2020. In February, Morawiecki was charged with exceeding his powers and failing to perform official duties, facing up to three years’ imprisonment. Costs totalling 56 450.4 thousand zlotys were incurred by the state companies in organising the elections.
