Tusk Declines to Comment on Mejza’s Speeding Arrest

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk dismissed questions about MP Łukasz Mejza’s 200 km/h speeding arrest, saying he was not the right person to judge the matter while the ruling party prepares a review.

Tusk at RFK Visit

On Tuesday Donald Tusk visited the RFK facility in Racibórz, where he was asked about rumors that MP Łukasz Mejza had been stopped for speeding. Tusk replied that he was not the best person to judge such a case, and that a driver exceeding speed limits might temporarily lose a driving licence.

He added that a past personal experience of being stopped for a traffic check had not made him a spokesperson for parliamentary immunity, calling the idea “ridiculous.”

PiS Launches Investigation into Mejza

The Polish Law and Justice (PiS) party announced that it would examine the situation involving its MP. PiS spokesperson Rafał Bochenek said the case will be scrutinised by the party’s ethics committee and that the standards applied to Mejza are “completely different” from those for the Civic Platform party.

Party members reportedly believe Mejza should leave the party, stating “no one should laugh at this person – he hurts us.”

Under investigation, the MP may soon be placed on “the rug” before Prime Minister Mateusz Kaczyński.

Speeding Incident Details

According to RMF FM, Mejza was stopped on the S3 expressway at a speed of 200 km/h. Police offered a fine of 2,500 PLN, which Mejza refused, citing parliamentary immunity. If the dispute persists, a request to dismiss his immunity will be filed in the Sejm.

Political Fallout

The incident has ignited debate on enforcing traffic laws against lawmakers and raises questions about the use of parliamentary immunity in Poland’s political system.
