Will Russia Attack Power Plant in Ostrołęka? NATO’s Response May Not Be Straightforward

An expert from the Strategy & Future think tank argues that a Russian drone strike on the Ostrołęka power plant is unlikely and NATO’s reaction would be a calculated political decision.

Russia’s Potential Attack on Ostrołęka Power Plant

Albert Świdziński said that the notion of a Russian drone attack on the Ostrołęka power plant is not simple and is unlikely to occur.

He warned that Poland’s ability to respond independently is limited, citing inadequate long‑range attack platforms and the belief that any available JASSM missiles are controlled by the United States.

Will NATO Respond to a Potential Attack?

Świdziński stressed that Article 5 is activated only through a deliberate political decision; there is no automatic trigger.

He added that world leaders would weigh the risk–benefit ratio before acting, noting that Russia could wield nuclear weapons, so NATO’s response might be limited to avoid uncontrolled escalation.

What Could the Netherlands Do?

The expert explained that NATO members have no preset reaction plan; each country will decide what it deems appropriate.

He suggested that the Netherlands might deploy any available troops or aircraft, or, if its political leadership considers it responsible, simply send a symbolic postcard from the Dutch Antilles.
