Mirella of Świętochłowice Allegedly Locked in Home for 27 Years

On July 29, 2023, police in Świętochłowice found 42‑year‑old Mirella amid claims she had been confined to her apartment by her parents for 27 years.

Initial Report by ‘Fakt’ Media

According to a ‘Fakt’ report, Mirella had supposedly been locked in an apartment for 27 years by her parents. She was found in critical condition, emaciated, with leg injuries reaching bone. Neighbors called police and ambulance; she was saved. She had no job, no ID, no personal clothes, and lived in a single room.

Police Statement on July 29

On July 29, Świętochłowice police released an explanation. They said the intervention followed a domestic dispute complaint. Two women, including Mirella, were present. Both her and her 81‑year‑old mother claimed no dispute and that Mirella needed no aid. Police noted visible leg swelling and difficulty walking; an ambulance was called and Mirella was transported to hospital.

Police Deny Media Claims

Police stated preliminary findings do not confirm that Mirella had been kept against her will for 27 years. They also said no basis exists for initiating a “Blue Card” procedure. Investigation is ongoing by the Criminal Police Division to determine whether a crime was committed.

Prosecutor Sabina Kuśmierska said Mirella had never worked, had no ID and had left school at 15. Authorities will obtain court‑psychiatric and medical opinions, hospital records, and will interview neighbors who first reported the incident. The father and mother will be questioned. Prosecutor urged caution with media reports, focusing on official information.
