The European Commission has adopted a proposal for a unified drone wall, setting completion by end‑2027 and operational readiness next year.
Drone wall in the EU
The European Commission’s proposal for a unified drone wall was adopted by EU commissioners, as reported by PolskieRadio24.pl. The completion of the investment is projected by the end of 2027, with operational readiness expected next year. This confirmed unofficial reports from Brussels correspondent Beata Płomecka of Polish Radio, who in the Wednesday, 15 October announced these plans.
Discussion and Financing
Initial discussions on establishing the drone wall could take place at a meeting one week later in Brussels. As indicated by Polish Radio, the future of the EU Commission’s plan depends on member states. Currently, the European Commission suggests that the wall be financed within national budgets and through low‑interest loans from the European Deterrence Fund. Poland and other Eastern European countries also expect non‑repayable grants.
Concerns About the Drone Wall
Recall that the proposal to build a drone wall was put forward by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen after Russia violated Poland’s airspace. Subsequent incidents occurred over airports in Denmark and Germany. However, governments of southern and western European countries expressed doubts, arguing that the idea was too focused on the eastern border of the EU, while drones could pose threats across the entire continent.
