New European Defence Map
The European Commission announced on 16 October the launch of the document titled “Preserve Peace. Defensive Readiness Roadmap 2030,” which outlines plans to build an integrated security system across EU member states. It seeks to strengthen the eastern flank and prepare for a potential conflict with Russia, described as a “constant threat.” The plan involves expanding national armies, investing in the defence industry, and collaborating with NATO.
Drone‑Defence Wall and Anti‑Air Shield
A top priority is constructing a continent‑wide anti‑drone wall in partnership with Ukraine. The system will comprise radars, sensors, and hardened air‑defence units. The first tenders are set for early 2026, with provisional operational readiness expected by the end of next year.
Concurrently, the EU aims to build a multilayered anti‑air shield to protect the bloc from aircraft, missiles, and drones. Commission plans call for the drone wall to be fully functional by the end of 2027. To address member states’ concerns about the Commission’s strong position, a proposal was made to strengthen the role of national defence ministers and emphasize cooperation among European leaders.
Common Procurement and Technological Investment
The Commission urges member states to pursue joint weapons orders and support European defence firms. The strategy also envisions developing space capabilities, including military reconnaissance and communications satellites.
The EU stresses that the new strategy is meant to reinforce NATO rather than compete with it. Presidents of EU countries will discuss the plan’s details at next week’s summit in Brussels.
