A 46‑year‑old truck driver was fatally bitten by three dogs that escaped from a private range near Zielona Góra on 12 October, prompting a new prosecution inquiry.
Background of the Incident
On Sunday, 12 October, three dogs leapt from a private shooting range in Raculi near Zielona Góra and attacked a truck driver harvesting mushrooms in a forest beside the S3 road. He was taken to hospital with severe injuries and died on 14 October.
Previous Attacks by the Dogs
Investigations show the dogs had a history of aggression. In 2022, six dogs from the same range attacked a woman, her daughter and a family dog while they passed by, resulting in a 600‑zloty fine for the owner. In 2023, the father’s son was severely bitten; he survived but suffered permanent ear amputations and long‑term kidney damage. The case was closed after the prosecutor deemed the victim entered the range unlawfully.
Investigation and Prosecutor’s Involvement
The District Prosecutor’s Office in Zielona Góra, led by prosecutor Ewa Antonowicz, took over the case because the dog owner is a former police officer. The dogs are now secured at a temporary holding facility and will be examined by a behavioral specialist; their future will depend on the expert report. The prosecutor also plans to re‑examine the earlier incidents.
City Cooperation with Prosecutors
The City of Zielona Góra announced full cooperation with police and the prosecutor’s office, pledging to provide all documents related to the range’s operations since 2018, including administrative decisions and expert opinions.
Autopsy and Potential Charges
An autopsy of the deceased was scheduled for Thursday, 16 October. The body was reported to have over 50 fractures. Findings from the forensic examination and specialist opinions will determine whether charges against the dog owner are pursued.
