Polish MP Łukasz Mejza has given up his parliamentary immunity after a speeding violation on the S3 motorway, pledging to pay the fine and donate the amount to road‑victim assistance.
Mejza Surrenders Immunity Over Speeding
On Thursday, 16 October, Łukasz Mejza announced that he would immediately relinquish his immunity for the speeding offence on the S3. He expressed regret, stating that the situation would not recur, and apologized to the public.
Accusations Against Other MPs
Mejza warned that he was not a “Grodowski” hiding behind immunity and urged parliament to focus on more serious cases “such as Grodowski or Giertych.” He singled out Donald Tusk, Grzegorz Schetyna, Piotr Krasko and Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz as examples of officials whose alleged high‑speed infractions were far more egregious.
Earlier Speed‑Related Incidents of Polish Politicians
Mejza noted that Tusk and Schetyna reportedly exceeded speed limits multiple times within built‑up areas, a behavior he labels potential road‑kill. Krasko was previously convicted for driving while licence revoked, and Cimoszewicz was acquitted in 2024 of charges for striking a cyclist at a crossing after allegedly fleeing the scene, although a court later ordered further expert investigation.
Fine Paid and Donation Announced
Despite initial reluctance, Mejza confirmed he would pay the 2,500 PLN fine issued for the S3 incident and donate the same amount to organisations assisting victims of road accidents.
