Polish MP Łukasz Mejza was detained Monday for exceeding the speed limit by 80 km/h on the S3 highway, sparking talks of a parliamentary immunity review.
Mejza Arrested for Speeding
On Monday, 13 October, MP Łukasz Mejza was stopped by police for driving 200 km/h on the S3 expressway, where the limit is 120 km/h.
The lawmaker was detained for a traffic check and reportedly refused to accept a fine, citing his parliamentary immunity.
Mejza later issued a statement regarding the incident.
Police Analyzing Evidence
Police are conducting a detailed analysis of the case documentation, including an intervention note, interview protocol, the refusal of the fine, and dash‑cam footage.
The goal is to establish whether Mejza’s conduct warrants removal of his immunity and transfer of the case to the courts.
Case to Be Handed to the General Prosecutor
After the evidence review, a request will be forwarded to the Sejm’s General Prosecutor for the final decision on eliminating the MP’s immunity.
If the immunity is revoked, the case will go to court, where a harsher penalty than the original fine could be imposed.
Immunity Removed? A Potential Judicial Outcome
Mejza is no longer able to accept the fine he previously declined. The decision whether to strip his immunity rests with the parliament, pending the prosecutor’s recommendation.
