Mirella, 42, Lived Inside Her Parents’ Home for 27 Years—Psychologist Points to Possible Scenarios

A 42‑year‑old Polish woman named Mirella, from Świętochłowice, was discovered only recently after 27 years of living inside her parents’ apartment, prompting psychological analysis of her situation.

Shock Revealed After Police Raid

Police arrived in Mirella’s apartment only last week, alerted by neighbors after a domestic disturbance. She had remained inside her parents’ home since 1997, when she was 15 and stopped attending school. The authorities found her emaciated with bone‑level leg wounds. The residents claimed no fight had taken place and she allegedly did not need help, yet medical assistance was called for her condition.

Psychologist Outlines Potential Scenarios

Dr Beata Rajba, a social psychologist and lecturer at Collegium Witelon, said there are several possible explanations. First, the situation could be a form of neglect‑derived violence, with an undiagnosed psychological disorder prompting her parents to turn her away. Second, she might have been forcibly restrained at home, though she denies being held against her will. Third, a controlling dynamic could have confined her in an attempt to “protect” her. Dr Rajba notes that distinguishing these scenarios without thorough investigation is impossible, but the first two seem most plausible.

Returning to Reality: The Role of Support

Dr Rajba emphasized that people who have spent years isolated—whether through kidnapping or prolonged family confinement—often return to society cracked and traumatized. Successful reintegration requires step‑by‑step therapy and ongoing support. She cautioned that society must refuse indifference toward those emerging from such situations.

How to Intervene in Possible Abuse Situations

If you encounter someone who appears frightened, lost, or attempts to make contact, it may signal a need for help. Neighbors hearing shouting or domestic fighting must promptly alert authorities. Intervening early can trigger a victim’s exit from abuse and help secure their safety, expert Dr Rajba stresses.
