We Want Consent, but Kaczyński Smokes

Konfederacja’s Sławomir Mentzen says talks with President Karol Nawrocki over a Senate pact are underway, but tensions with PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński threaten to stall the deal.

Senate Pact Proposal

A proposed Senate pact would remove the upper house from the ruling coalition, with President Karol Nawrocki positioned as a patron or host of the arrangement. The idea has long been part of right‑wing discussions, and Konfederacja believes it could have political leverage for the party.

Mentzen on Negotiations

In a recent interview with Polsat News, Mentzen confirmed that he has already discussed the pact with Nawrocki and that the president could serve as the alliance’s host. He described negotiations with PiS as fraught with misunderstandings and described the conflict between party leaders as a “festival of blows.”

Kaczyński’s Opposition

Jarosław Kaczyński has denounced Mentzen’s involvement, calling it a misunderstanding, and has repeatedly accused Konfederacja leaders of attempting to negotiate with Civic Platform—a claim he later denied.

Kaczyński’s rhetoric frames the right as unable to agree, creating a negative image that he insists should fall on PiS.

Pawłowski on Polls and Threats

Łukasz Pawłowski, a commentator for the All‑Nation Research Group, warned that while Konfederacja lost only half a percentage point in the 15 October poll, PiS suffered a nearly three‑point decline. He argues that the real threat comes from Grzegorz Braun’s party, whose 7% support is comparable to PiS’s decline since the 2023 parliamentary elections.

Challenges for the Right

Konfederacja’s advisers say negotiating directly with Kaczyński is impossible because he is fixated on independent governance. They stress that a Senate pact under Nawrocki’s patronage could force PiS to cooperate, otherwise the right would be fragmented.

Unified Front Possibility

Member Grzegorz Płaczek called the Senate pact “an interesting idea” and suggested that Nawrocki could be the face of a united right front for the elections, potentially enabling the coalition to reclaim the upper house.
