Severe Weather Collapse in Poland—IMGW Sets Date

The Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management warned of violent rain, strong winds and fog across the Pomeranian and western regions on Saturday, 18 October, with temperatures rising into the weekend.

Saturday Warning for Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

On Saturday, 18 October, the Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) issued a first‑level warning for the Pomeranian province and the eastern part of West Pomerania. Forecasts call for 20–30 mm of rain, locally 40 mm, with possible thunderstorms along the coast. Winds are expected to average 55 km/h, reaching gusts of 85 km/h from the north. Dense fog on the weekend will reduce visibility to 200–400 m.

Sunday: A Brighter Day in the East

Sunday is expected to feature more sunshine, though rain remains likely around the Gdańsk Bay area and on the western outskirts of Masovia near Mława, Płock, and Łódź. Temperatures will rise to 5–7 °C in Podkarpacie, Suwałki, and the Masurian region and reach 10–11 °C along the Lubusz land and the coast. Winds will be light and variable.

Early October Warming Trend

The first week of October is projected to bring warmer temperatures. Monday will start sunny with low temperatures, dropping to 0 °C overnight in many places and, locally, frost to –5 °C. Minimum temperatures will stay around 2–4 °C over the sea and in Greater Poland. Fog may reduce visibility to 100–200 m, and winds will be weak from the southeast.

Mid‑October Spike Before the Fall Weather Collapse

Temperatures between Wednesday and Friday should climb several dozen degrees, making Thursday the hottest day. In Lesser Poland temperatures could reach 20 °C. By Saturday, a sharp change in weather is expected to lead into the fall weather collapse identified by IMGW.

Confirmed Weather Collapse Before November 1

IMGW forecaster Tomasz Siemieniuk told the Polish Press Agency that severe weather will deteriorate again before All Saints’ Day. Heavy rainfall is forecast for many regions, with temperatures warm enough to reach 17–19 °C. On 1 November, a stable, high‑pressure system is anticipated, bringing sunshine and clear skies.
