Hołownia’s Unexpected Career Move: Not About the UN

Szymon Hołownia has a backup plan to become Poland’s ambassador to the United States if his bid for the Sejm marshal fails, according to Gazeta Wyborcza, a claim backed by insiders from Poland 2050.

Hołownia’s Backup: U.S. Ambassador?

Gazeta Wyborcza reports that if Hołownia does not secure the Sejm marshal position, he intends to pursue the post of Polish ambassador to the United States. The diplomatic mission is currently headed by chargé d’affaires Bogdan Klich, and the idea was also mentioned by Wojciech Szacki in a podcast.

Opposition from the Cabinet

The prime minister’s office, Vice‑Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski do not endorse Hołownia for the marshal role, the paper notes. Cabinet officials have stated outright that Hołownia is not “qualified” and that the government seeks a trustworthy candidate.

Answer from the Opposition

Opposition spokespeople denied hearing of a Plan B for Hołownia during a nighttime visit to Adam Bieleń’s apartment and an encounter with Jarosław Kaczyński, where the prospective U.S. ambassadorship was not discussed.

Sejm Marshal Succession Plan

In early October, Hołownia announced he would resign as Sejm marshal on 13 November. According to the coalition agreement between the Civic Coalition, Polish People’s Party, Poland 2050, and the Left, the office will pass to Left co‑chairman Włodzimierz Czarzasty. The vote is slated for 19 November, aligned with the start of a three‑day parliamentary session, and Hołownia said no special session would be convened.
