Scandal in Britain: Police Probe Claims About the King’s Brother

On 19 October, UK police announced they are examining reports that Prince Andrew was involved in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse network, prompting the royal family to retract his titles.

UK Police Review Allegations Against Prince Andrew

On Sunday, 19 October, British police said they were investigating media claims that Prince Andrew had been involved in the sexual abuse network surrounding financier Jeffrey Epstein. Police referred to the original report that Prince Andrew allegedly asked his bodyguards to seek compromising information on Virginia Giuffre, who had accused him of molestation.

Evidence: Emails Summoned by Media Outlets

The Diario newspaper cited the prince’s email correspondence as evidence that he instructed bodyguards to obtain sensitive data about Giuffre. The Sunday Telegraph noted that Andrew was allegedly trying to uncover dirt on the woman, raising concerns about the misuse of security staff.

Government Response to Allegations

Energy and Climate Minister Ed Miliband told the BBC that the accusations are deeply troubling and that bodyguards should not be used in such a manner. He stressed that the claims are not an appropriate way to employ security personnel.

Virginia Giuffre’s Claims and Death

Virginia Giuffre, who died in early 2024 in Australia, said she was among girls and young women abused by Epstein and his associates. She accused the prince of forcing her to have sex on three separate occasions, including at a London residence in 2001 when she was 17.

Prince Andrew’s Decision to Abandon Official Titles

Two days after announcing his withdrawal from public duties, Prince Andrew said he would no longer use his official titles as a result of public allegations, including ties to Epstein. He stated the decision followed consultations with King Charles III and the family.

The loss of titles such as Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh could be altered by Parliament. The prince’s title of “Prince” remains due to birthright, as established by a 1917 convention introduced by George V.
