A Boeing 747 derailed from Hong Kong International Airport’s north runway, struck a security patrol vehicle and plunged into the South China Sea on Monday morning.
Aircraft hits security vehicle and plunges into sea
On Monday morning, a Boeing 747 leased by Emirates via ACT Airlines left the north runway at Hong Kong International Airport, struck a security patrol vehicle, broke through the perimeter fence, and partially entered the South China Sea. Two passengers aboard the aircraft were killed.
Crew unharmed
According to the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department, no members of the flight crew were injured in the incident. The aircraft carried no cargo.
Airport remains operational
Airport authorities confirmed that the security vehicle was patrolling a standard area near the north runway and had not entered the runway. The incident did not affect airport operations; the runway will reopen after a safety inspection. Investigation into the cause is ongoing.
