PiS MP Łukasz Mejza, caught driving about 200 km/h on the S3, rejected the speeding fine but later donated 2,500 zł to road‑accident victims, prompting the party to defend him amid speculation of expulsion.
Speeding Incident
MP Łukasz Mejza was caught driving about 200 km/h—almost twice the legal limit—on the S3 corridor in Lower Silesia last Monday.
Refusal and Apology
Mejza refused to accept the ticket, citing a rushed schedule that would have delayed him for his flight. In a statement to Radio ZET he apologized for his conduct and said he would settle the fine promptly if a legal means existed.
Donation to Road‑Victim Fund
On Thursday he announced the cancellation of the fine and the donation of 2,500 zł to a fund assisting victims of road accidents.
Party Defense
Unconfirmed reports indicate that PiS club chair Mariusz Błaszczak launched a defence, claiming that rival politicians had committed worse traffic offences and that Mejza’s actions had benefited the party.
Context of Parliamentary Episode
Błaszczak also cited Mejza’s hurried support for Law and Justice leader Jarosław Kaczyński during an April Sejm altercation with KO MP Roman Giertych, arguing it demonstrated Mejza’s loyalty and should preclude expulsion.
