A 44‑year‑old man was arrested in Warsaw on Oct. 21 for an attempted firebomb attack on the Civic Platform office, facing charges of hooliganism and assault.
Police Detain Suspect
The suspect was taken to Warsaw’s District Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday, 21 October after an attempt to set fire to the Civic Platform headquarters.
Allegations: Fire Attempt and Assault
Prosecutor Piotr Antoni Skiba says the first charge involves deliberately throwing a bottle to start a fire, then attempting to ignite the bottle’s contents after it broke, an act classified as hooliganism.
The second charge alleges that the man threw shards of glass at an intervening person who kicked, pushed, and tried to prevent him from lighting the spilled substance, constituting an assault.
Court Charges and Sentences
The prosecutor noted that the 44‑year‑old faces a potential prison term of six months to eight years for the hooliganism charge, possibly harsher as it is deemed serious hooliganism.
For the assault charge, the penalty could include a fine, restriction of liberty, or up to two years in prison.
Suspect’s Account of the Incident
When questioned, the suspect denied committing the alleged acts but provided a general explanation of the event. He did not dispute being on Wierjska Street, where he was surprised to find a café rather than only a political party headquarters, and claimed he repeatedly mentioned the current Prime Minister’s name, Donald Tusk.
