A 47‑year‑old man died after police used pepper spray and a stun gun in Bydgoszcz on Monday, prompting a prosecutor’s review.
Incident Overview
A 47‑year‑old patient was reported to be mentally disturbed and aggressive, threatening residents and medical staff. Police arrived at 16:38 and found him still hostile, refusing orders.
Responding officers deployed pepper spray, followed by a stun gun. Only after these measures was he subdued and neutralised.
Fatal Medical Response

He stopped breathing, leading to resuscitation attempts. Despite transport to hospital, paramedics declared him dead at 18:45.
Investigation and Police Review
The incident was immediately reported to the prosecutor and internal control units. A prosecutor’s investigation will determine all details.
Initial findings suggest officers followed procedures. The patrol unit lacked recorded video, but evidence of the stun gun usage was secured.
Internal Oversight
Control actions are conducted by officers from the Regional Police Command Control Department, the Main Police Command Control Office, and the Police Internal Affairs Department.
Officials confirm no signs of procedural errors by the intervening officers.
